Robbie Puryea, Marine

About a month or two ago, while Robbie was in basic training, Elizabeth expressed her concern to me about his safety. She is 4 right now, so I honestly wasn’t expecting her to fully understand the dangers or the risks that someone in the military would take. But she was scared for him, and I had to explain this to her.

As much as I would like to, I can’t lie to her and shelter her from realistic possibilities. So I can’t guarantee that he will always be OK. The only thing I can tell her is the truth.

And the truth is that Robbie is brave and courageous, and he knew what he was doing when he chose to sign up. He put a lot of thought into this decision, and he’s tough enough to handle it. So although it very well can be dangerous it wasn’t enough to scare him away. Since he isn’t too scared, we shouldn’t be either.

Yesterday basic training came to an end, and he officially became a Marine.

We’re proud of you.
