Ok, I know my response is a little late (not that I think anyone cares about what I think), but I have just been chewing on this for a while trying to figure out how I really feel about the uproar. First I must say, I am a Christian. So what does that mean to me? It means that I have surrendered my life to Christ and accept Him as my Lord and Savior. I hate to answer when asked, “Yes, I’m a Christian”, because so many people claim to be Christian when not one area of their lives reflect it. Also, I hate titles. Secondly, you must know that I rarely eat at Chick-Fil-A. I personally think their chicken is greasy. I may go once or twice a year and not because I am craving it but more because my little girls like to play on the slide. I am a Dunkin Donuts fan, (chicken salad croissant sandwich,Yum).
I’m in the dark a little as to how this ugly mess began, but I think Chick-Fil-A was asked about their view on gay marriage. Which right off the bat is just being mischievous. Chick-Fil-A is not hiding the fact that they have Christian values. In my opinion the person/s who asked are the only ones with an ill agenda. This is nothing more than a political dispute, an age-old feud between Christians and non-Christians. In reality I’m sure there are self declared Christians on both sides of this fence. The ones that showed up on August 1st fueling the fire, and the ones that are speaking out withdrawing their support who have forgotten God’s Word also teaches forgiveness. Now, I have to back up and elaborate on my opinion of Christians showing up in droves across America at their nearest Chick-Fil-A earlier this week. As if it wasn’t bad enough for someone to seek out trouble and ridicule the restaurant chain trying to be true to their beliefs, it was further more ridiculous and needless to say unnecessary for anyone to oblige the “throw down” invitation. God does not need us to fight his battles. Even Jesus corrected His disciple that felt the need to come to His aid and ended up cutting off the ear of a soldier who came for Jesus http://www.fridaystudy.org/html/john/john18.htm. Since when did Jesus ever, in his thirty three years of walking on Earth, fight criticism with accepting a challenge to a duel? I am NOT saying that is what all the supporters meant, but I feel that is how it appeared. Which in turn is just a small victory for Satan.
We are called to stand firm in our Godly beliefs, but if our response causes offense, it is probably not the right response. Chick-Fil-A answered the question they were asked much like Jesus answered Satan when provoked to jump off the pinnacle of the Temple if he believed His God was so awesome. He said,”It is said, Thou shalt not tempt the Lord thy God! (Luke 4:9-12). He was standing firm on God’s Word. The supporters who showed up in the name of the “duel”,were much like the loving disciple Simon-Peter in John chapter 18. August 1st will have been a success if come this Sunday churches across the United States are testifying about souls being saved because of this. I fear all it has done was create more negative media attention. We, especially as Christians, need to take extra care of what we say and do out of taking offense. Offense disguises itself so cleverly sometimes. I have been guilty of this more times than I’d like, to my shame. In Matthew 5:39 it talks about turning the other cheek (i love this) http://provocativechristian.wordpress.com/2009/01/23/provocative-bible-verses-turn-the-other-cheek/ Imagine if this were how we responded this week. This would have fizzled out like a match in a down pour and done more good for the Kingdom of God.
